Today is Memorial Day in the U.S. This day was originally instituted as Decoration Day in 1868, and endures as a day to remember those that fell in times of war. To commemorate, we bundled two stories with subjects U.S. civil war and Memorial Day.
The first is An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by civil war soldier Ambrose Bierce, published in 1890. Other than its subject, the story is of interest due its non-linear narration and because it’s told from the point of view of the narrator, which makes it one of the earliest examples of a stream of consciousness format. Themes are dying with dignity and that there is no romance or glory in war.
The second story is Comrades by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps which was posthumously published following her death in 1911. Phelps was an American feminist who challenged gender roles, female clothing traditions and the christian afterlife, and who became an antivivisection advocate later in life. The subject Comrades is Memorial Day itself.
