I don’t follow a lot of TV series but one I do is Supernatural. The show is in its thirteenth season and tells the story (life story, by now) of two brothers who crisscross through the U.S. fighting the supernatural. They call themselves hunters, and hearing this last week on the show set me in mind of seeking out some hunting-related stories.
In this week’s bundle we have a story by 20th century U.S. pulp fiction author Leroy Yerxa, called Phantom of the Forest, which was published under the pseudonym Lee Francis. This piece, like the TV show referenced above, deals with the supernatural. Yerxa was a prolific writer who sold more than 70 stories in four years, until his untimely death in 1946.
The second piece is Hunter Quatermain’s Story by H. Rider Haggard. Haggard was an English author of adventure stories, and who, with his works predominantly set in Africa, was influential on the ‘Lost World’ tradition of literature. In Hunter Quatermain’s Story Haggard’s protagonist Allan Quatermain, of King’s Solomon’s Mines fame, recounts a tragically dangerous expedition in South-Africa to a group of dinner party guests.
