Humorous Americans

This is the second bundle in a series of humorous editions which we hope will help start the new year in a positive way. After last week’s humorous stories from English literature, it’s now time to hand it over to the Americans.

The first story is this bundle is Sandburrs by Alfred Henry Lewis. Lewis was an American investigative journalist, editor, and writer with a long tenure at the Chicago Times-Herald. He was best known for his Westerns.

The second piece is Pigs is Pigs by Ellis Parker Butler. Butler was a turn of the nineteenth century American author of over 30 books and 2000 stories and essays. Surprisingly, Butler was only a part-time author, working full-time as a banker. First published in 1905, Pigs is Pigs is a story about a bureaucratic stationmaster who insists on levying the livestock rate for a shipment of two pet guinea pigs, and which to add insult to injury start proliferating exponentially. Pigs is Pigs was reprinted several times over the next few decades, in addition to being adapted to the small and big screen.
